The 5 best ways to explore Budapest

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

By boat.

With the beautiful Danube flowing right through the city centre, this is obviously one of the very best ways to see the city. The city name of Budapest is actually made up of two separate parts of the city, one on each bank of the river, Buda and Pest. There are many sight seeing cruises which will show you the city highlights from the water, and many themed cruises, such as cocktail cruises, wine cruises, craft beer cruises and even a pizza cruise. Budapest looks spectacular viewed from the Danube at any time but don’t miss the chance to see it at night, when the city lights make it even more magical.

By TukTuk.

Yes, you read it correctly. TukTuk. No this is not Bangkok, it is Budapest. And yes, you really can take a TukTuk tour around the streets of this city and see the highlights from a cool little red machine. It is a super fun way to travel and the drivers are passionate about their city, knowing which corners to explore.

By bike.

There are plenty of good cycling options in Budapest and especially if you want to venture a little more outside the city centre to see places like Margaret Island or even as far as the town of Szentendre. With over 200kms of bike routes, lanes and paths, bike culture is growing in the city. The Buda Danube bank route follows the river between Rakoczi bridge and Arpad bridge offering stunning views of the city. Get on your bike and ride!

By MonsteRoller.

You could Segway but why would you want to when you can Monsteroller around the city?! They are even eco-friendly! Fully electric. Zero-emission. 100% fun. 25 km/h top speed and up to 40 km range. 9″ wide tires, low platform and hydraulic disc brakes. Anyway, enough with specs, just grab one and go explore, on your own or join a tour with a guide. These machines are too cool.

By foot.

One of the best ways to explore a city is just to put away the map or phone, and wander, deciding on each corner which way you will turn and not worrying about where you will end up. Stop at a café because it looks tasty and is full of locals, not because some review platform tells you that you must! However, if you are not so confident to wander on your own Budapest offers a huge array of walking tours with themes ranging from Jewish history to ruin bars, from Communist history to craft beer. Whichever way you go it is sure to be a rewarding experience.

Or if you are planning to do several tours, why not consider a citis2go city pass https://citis2go.com/city/budapest
