5 Prague cafes you should visit

Prague is full of historical, quirky, bohemian and modern cafes. We suggest 5 worth visiting.

Kavárna Obecní dům (Municipal House Cafe)

The Municipal House is one of the most important monuments of Czech Art Nouveau and this is definitely one of the most beautiful cafes in Prague. The spirit of the 1920s is alive and kicking with original tiles, dividing walls and boxes of mahogany and leather-covered benches still in place. Delicious coffee and mouth-watering desserts.

Grand Cafe Orient

Located inside the House of the Black Madonna, which is a symbol of the Czech contribution to the cubist movement not only in architecture but also in furniture, pottery and glass. The House of the Black Madonna was created by the renowned architect Josef Gočár when he was only 31 years old. The internal furnishings in the café reveal cubist aspects such as a beautiful cubist buffet-bar and other furnishings and elegant lights and lanterns all designed by Josef Gočár. With your coffee, don't miss the chance to order one of the café’s sweet specialties “věneček” a custard-filled pastry which is made as a square rather than the usual circle for another touch of Cubism.

Cukrárna Alchymista (Alchemist Patisserie)

Situated in what some people have described as the most beautiful backyard garden in Prague, this is a cafe, sweet shop and tea room where you can enjoy sitting outside in the garden by the fish pond, or inside the wooden walled salon with a painted ceiling that depicts an allegory of alchemy. What's more, if you are a real coffee aficionado, there is a coffee museum right next door

Coffee Room

Obviously there is no mistaking what this place offers! Part of Vinohrady's new coffee wave, this is a cosy, relaxed espresso bar with high quality premium coffee. Most of their coffee beans are sourced from roasters in Berlin, but they do feature Czech and Central Europe suppliers too on occasion. And if you plan on eating here, their breakfast menu is fully vegetarian, and mostly vegan, and the are able to prepare substitutions for most dietary restrictions.

EMA Espresso Bar

One of the busiest, and definitely one of the best espresso bars in Prague. These guys have won several industry awards, one of the reasons that during peak hours, you had better be prepared to queue. Their coffee selection is a mix of well-known European roasters and smaller, local sources. They have an awesome selection of homemade baked goods. Be sure to try their Czech buns, Prague kolache, and Linzer heart cookies.
