5 things you must see and do in Barcelona

Updated: Mar 23, 2020

Visit Sagrada Familia

It is the iconic symbol of the city. Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece, with such a unique design draws tourists from around the world. Several architectural designs are combined, and when it is finally finished it is expected to be the tallest church in the world. But throw away your standard images of cathedrals, this place looks nothing like any you have seen before. It is always busy, so we recommend a skip the line ticket to save yourself time.

Hop on and off a bus

If your time is limited, a hop on hop off bus tour is one of the best ways to maximise your sightseeing experience. A 1- day or 2-day pass means no need to worry about trying to find a place to buy tickets for metro or public buses or working out the best route. These buses take in all the major sights so sit back, relax, listen to the commentary and hop off at those places where you want to have a little bit more time to explore.

Sample the local food and wine

You may have heard of tapas but have you heard of picoteo? The origins of the word come from “picar” which in Spanish means small bites. You will find these in many bars all over the city. Don’t miss the Pa amb tomaquet, a traditional Catalan snack consisting of bread, normally toasted with garlic, tomato, olive oil and salt. Simple but delicious. Wine production in the area surrounding Barcelona is plentiful, and cava, sparkling wine in white or rose style is predominantly produced near here. If craft beer is your thing, you will find no lack of options in Barcelona as well. If you prefer to join a tour and be led by an expert there is plenty of choice.

Experience La Boqueira market

La Boqueria, the city's finest market for fresh produce, including meat, fish, and vegetables is situated on the famed Las Ramblas street, and is very popular among locals. Even if you are not interested in shopping, just wandering around and taking in the sights and smells, the bartering and the banter between shoppers and sellers under the gorgeous glass and iron roof is an experience not to be missed. There are even a few bars where you can sit with a cold beer and watch the action. If you would like more in-depth information about the market, you can also join a tour.

Stroll around Parc Guell

We start with Gaudi and we finish with him as well. The park was built from 1900 to 1914 and opened in 1926. It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984. It is most renowned for the multi coloured mosaics to be seen on the terrace walls and the star of many an Instagram post, the salamander. The park is extremely popular and tickets are limited by the hour to avoid overcrowding. Why not take a tour to learn more in detail and to gain skip the line access.
