A fully flat bed in economy class? No longer just a dream.

Air New Zealand reveals a new product that will offer customers a lie-flat sleep option on long-haul routes.

The "Skynest" provides six beds within a pod, arranged into two bunks with three levels each. The beds themselves are 200 centimetres long, 58 centimetres wide and are completely flat.

Skynest was developed over three years of research and development and is planned to be used initially on Air New Zealand' s proposed service between Auckland and New York, which can take up to 17 hours and 40 minutes.

Air New Zealand's Head of Airline Programmes Kerry Reeves says 'can do' is one of the airline's key values and the Economy Skynest prototype is a tangible example of this.

"At Air New Zealand, we continue to nurture a can-do attitude, we're not afraid of being bold and trying new things. The question is never 'can we do this' but instead 'is it right to do this for our customers?' and, if so, 'how will we do this?'"

"We see a future flying experience where an economy-class customer on long-haul flights would be able to book the Economy Skynest in addition to their Economy seat, get some quality rest and arrive at their destination ready to go," Nikki Goodman, Air New Zealand's general manager of customer experience, explained.

The concept is another step from the Economy Skycouch also launched by Air New Zealand to offer economy class passengers the option to get a better rest on long haul flights. The expected usage of the Skynest would see customers pay for an allocated time slot with Air New Zealand staff changing bedding between customer use.
