Armenia - history in abundance

Updated: Mar 19, 2020

Visit Yerevan, the capital of Armenia and step back in time.

Khor Virap monastery

The city of Yerevan is full of famous landmarks including the Erebuni fortress recognised as the birthplace of the city and built by King Argishti I in 782BC. There are a wealth of museums in the city as well as numerous art galleries, libraries, as well as opera and theatres. The city is also well known for the huge number of cafes it boasts.

Outside of the capital city, the landscape of Armenia is wild and varied and has its roots deep in history. Armenia was the first country to adopt Christianity as its state religion in 301AD. Many historical churches and religious buildings can be found across this land.

At Lake Sevan which is the largest lake in Armenia, the spectacular Sevanavank Monastery is definitely worth a visit. The lake itself sits at around 1900 metres above sea level and surrounded by mountains of up to 3000 metres, this provides the visitor with a spectacular setting.

Armenians are a very hospitable people, and if you are lucky enough to be invited to eat with a local family, you had better have a big appetite.

Don’t miss the opportunity to try some local wine as well. Experts believe that Armenia was actually home to the first wine ever made following a discovery by archaeologists in 2011, of a cave at Areni which dates back to 4000BC. It contained a shallow basin to press grapes, a vat for storage, and fermentation jars. They also found grape seeds, remains of pressed grapes, and dozens of dried vines.
