Beijing's Daxing International Airport is open.

Chinese President Xi Jinping declares the airport open shortly before the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China on October 1.

The airport's maiden flight also took off from one of the airport's four runways, operated by Daxing's main tenant, China Southern Airways, who used an Airbus A380, the world's biggest airliner.

The new airport will carry the code PKX, and initially is only available for domestic flights as customs and immigration are not yet operational. However by early 2020 flights from Daxing International are expected to visit 112 destinations around the world.

Beijing's existing airport is already the second biggest in the world in terms of passenger numbers according to statistics from the Airports Council International.
