Before my visit, I thought a visit to Siem Reap meant a visit to one temple, Angkor wat. What I now know is that Angkor wat is just one of a series of amazingly beautiful and varied temples which cover an area of around 400 square kilometres, remnants of the Khmer empire from the 9th to the 15th century.
This UNESCO World Heritage site is easy to get around by car but I found it much more fun with a tuk tuk for the day and a friendly driver happy to point out the highlights and waiting with a smile each time I returned from exploring a temple on foot.
And whilst Angkor Wat is the biggest and most famous (and that means more people!) some of the smaller less well known ones are equally as rewarding to visit.
Don’t miss Bayon, which has hundred of carved stone faces, or Ta Phrom where trees grow amongst the ruins and also famous as the filming location for the Tomb Raider movie.
The small city of Siem Reap is where you will most likely be based. It is a busy place with lots of markets, shops and bars. It is worth getting away from the main hub and you will find boutique hotels, excellent local restaurants and quirky bars.
The Angkor complex is an absolute must see, truly befitting the title of a world wonder.
