Greek island hopping? Here are 3 you may never have heard of, but definitely should visit.

Folegandros - Cyclades

Just a one hour boat ride away from arguably Greece's most famous island of Santorini, Folegandros is a small island with one of the most beautiful and spectacular villages you could wish to see. Chora, perched on the edge of a cliff 200 metres above sea level offers the most incredible views out across the Aegean sea. The village centre is closed to traffic and is a maze of cobblestoned streets and alleys, and picture perfect squares with traditional tavernas, bars and shops. It really comes alive in the evenings, but don't expect nightclubs and raucous bars. You are more likely to see locals playing traditional Greek music to those enjoying the fresh seafood, fruit, vegetables and perhaps a local goat dish.

Symi - Dodecanese

Symi is probably best known for it's harbour at Gialos, where most ferries dock and indeed also many yachts of all shapes and sizes. As you enter the harbour your eyes fall upon row upon row of brightly coloured traditional stone houses, set in a horseshoe around the bay. One of the main industries on Symi was sponge fishing and you will see plenty for sale in the small shops around the harbour. Symi also has a monastery which is popular with visitors, located on the southwest coast of the island. Beaches mostly need to be reached by water tax but these go frequently from the harbour. And when you return in the late afternoon, nothing beats a sitting at a harbourside cafe and watching the boats and the people passing by.

Skopelos - Sporades

Part of the Sporades group in the northern part of Greece, Skopelos leapt to prominence with many people when the movie Mamma Mia was filmed there. The main port of Skopelos town is a busy harbour with plenty to watch in the evening as ferries come and go, fishing boats return with their catches, and local cats prowl the footpaths on the lookout for any generous diners. For beaches you need to travel outside the town and there are some spectacular options especially on the coast near New Klima, such as Hovolo beach where the mix of the green pines, white cliffs and turquoise water is unforgettable. The island of Alonissos is also just a short boat ride away and also worth a visit - an extremely green island and even quieter than Skopelos.
