Corfu is a unique island located in the Ionian Sea. The history of the island
stretches back to ancient times but the most important
periods for the island were those of the Venice Republic, French and
British rule.
When you choose to visit Corfu, what can you do on the island?
Corfu is green island with more than 4 million olive trees, from
which you can taste local olive oil. Around this green beauty you can
also find the Koumkouat tree with small oranges, from which local people prepare
liquor or sweets. The island is full of wild flowers and herbs also.
One point of importance on the island is Paleokastritsa, the last stop for
Odysseus, a place of crystal bays and an old Orthodox monastery on the
hill. And the best view for Paleokastritza is from Bella vista view,
the name of that place originates from the Second World War from the period of
Italian Occupation.
The beauty of Corfu was loved by the Durrells, who lived on the island and in Kalami you can enjoy the house of Lawrence Durrell, which is now a good restaurant with amazing
views. And before the Durrells, Empress Sisi from Austria felt in love with Corfu,
and she built the Achillion palace in the village of Gastouri.
The palace is built in the spirit of Greek mythology and Italian art.
The capital of the island, Corfu Town, is partly UNESCO Heritage and
small romantic streets will bring you to the two big forts, Old and
New Fort. In the church of Saint Spyridon, you can find relics of the
Patron, who protected the island from illnesses, starving and invaders.
An icon of the Virgin Mary can be found in the Catholic Cathedral
and that icon was brought to the island during the Venetian period to
protect locals from illnesses.
Do not miss the chance to drink a coffee on the promenade Liston, which is a copy of Rue de Rivoli in Paris.
And if you still have time then visit the birthplace of Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elisabeth the 2nd.
