A beautiful medieval city centre, mixed with hip and modern cafes and restaurants.
Although it is one of northern Europe’s oldest cities, these days Tallinn is at the forefront of digitalisation in many areas of everyday life. Skype was founded here and the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Center of Excellence is located here as well. Free wi-fi is found all over the city. Estonians are a forward thinking and well connected bunch of people!
Leaving the city, you don‘t need to go far to find yourself surrounded by large swathes of uninhabited nature. Almost 50% of Estonia is covered by forest where wildlife still flourishes. Definitely worth a visit are the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.
In deep midwinter, you can even drive across the sea on an ice bridge to reach them although I preferred visiting in midsummer when Estonian tradition sees the locals partaking of beers or spirits, building a bonfire and then proceeding to run and jump over it! The sun barely makes it below the horizon and the celebrations are heartfelt and warm.
ESTONIA‘S CAPITAL CITY TALLINN, FEATURES ONE OF EUROPE‘S MOST BEAUTIFUL MEDIEVAL CITY CENTRES. THE OLDEST BUILDING IN TALLINN IS DOMINICAN ST. CATHERINE’S MONASTERY WHICH DATES TO 1246 AND THE CITY’S FORMER FORTRESS TO THE 14TH CENTURY. TAKE THE TIME TO WANDER THROUGH THE SMALL LANES AND STUMBLE ACROSS CUTE CAFES OR WELCOMING BARS AS YOU GO.
Back in Tallinn, the district of Kalamaja, in particular Telliskivi quarter, is the place to go for cafes, restaurants, bars and shops featuring local design. There are numerous guided walking or cycling tours if you prefer having a local offer you some inside knowledge. And don’t miss the chance to sample the local drink Vana Tallinn, a rum based liqueur – either straight up or add a shot to your coffee.
A beautiful, vibrant city full of history and charm – this is Tallinn!
