Let Food Lover show you the best of Madrid and Seville
When it comes to finding restaurants, bars and cafes in a new city, or even one you are not visiting for the first time, many people seek that authentic local's experience.
I was lucky enough to join not one, but two Food Lover tours recently in Seville and Madrid, to get a real local experience of drinks and picoteos. As the team at Food Lover explain, the word picoteo means “to pick,” or to share bites from big plates, and that’s exactly what I got to enjoy on these food tours.
My guide in Sevilla was Baptiste and he met us in an area called Santa Catalina to begin our walking tour. During the course of the night we made 5 stops at varying bars around the city, each one offering us a different drink option and 2 or 3 sample plates as well. As we walked, Baptiste enlightened us with stories of the city, both past and present day, to give us a real locals experience. Do not pass up the chance to try the local vermouth and the pork belly.

The following night I was in Madrid and joined Raul for another Picoteo tour. I know Spanish people are passionate, but Raul’s enthusiasm for his city and local food is something special. He loves to share his experiences and stories of each bar you visit, all of which have a distinctive local feel to them. My favourite was the corner bar where there was literally just enough room to squeeze in the door and stand elbow to elbow with the locals. Photos of famous footballers and actors lined every wall and you could hardly hear yourself speak, but I relished being part of that atmosphere!
Fabulous food and a great way to explore an area of the city not often featured in guidebooks.
