Getting crafty in Vancouver

Updated: Mar 19, 2020

Hop on a Vancouver Brewery tour and learn how and where the locals enjoy their craft beers.

All hail the Ale!

After 3 days of meetings in a cold, snowy Vancouver, a free Saturday loomed ahead of me and I decided to treat myself to a craft beer tour with Vancouver Brewery Tours.

“Vancouver Brewery Tours run a very professional operation. They work together with the various breweries.”

Offering both walking tours and minibus tours, I opted for warmth and comfort of the minibus thanks to the weather and after being picked up downtown, we were soon enroute to our first stop at Brassneck Brewery. Before we got to sample any beer here, we were given a backstage tour by our knowledgeable guide, squeezing our way past all the brewing equipment, smelling hops and getting a great overview into the passion and hands on approach behind these smaller craft breweries. It is all about experimentation and small batch brewing and soon we were sampling a tasting platter of 5 of their best beers. My personal favourite – Passive Aggressive!

A very chilled start, a good way to get to know the rest of the group, and soon it was time to head on over to East Van Brewing. This place had a bit more of an upmarket and commercial feel to it, but nevertheless still concentrates on small batch varieties and a community first approach. I liked the fact you could also get some beer snacks here to go with your tastings. Another delicious selection to taste, my pick of the bunch was the Unholy One Stout.

Our final stop was Storm Brewing (that is a bit of clever marketing!). This place is a real eye opener. A graffiti covered, ramshackle looking building greets you, and when you step inside you feel as if you are in the garage of someone who loves to collect old pieces of anything and everything. Something completely different. No tables or chairs, no bottles or cans, no food, no standing on ceremony. Just good beer! I tried my very first sour beer, not to my taste at all but others loved it. The Highland Scottish Ale was my pick.

At the end of a very pleasant Saturday afternoon, our friendly guide dropped us back to downtown Vancouver, where there are plenty of other craft beer options for those who wish to continue into the evening.

Vancouver Brewery Tours run a very professional operation. They work together with the various breweries (depending on the day of your tour you will visit different options), selecting the best beers for you to try and backing it up with a deep passion and knowledge for their city and its beer.

Snowy Saturday, Sunny Sunday, Wet Wednesday - it doesn’t matter, you will love these tours!
